3D Design Ideas

These are some initial designs for the music player character. The top three designs feature characteristics of existing players and all feature arms, legs as well as headphones to make turn the object into more of a character. Each of the designs are simple enough to be modelled in 3D without it becoming to complex and time consuming.

Personal mp3 Design Research

looking at the different variations of current mp3 devices, I have found a wide range of designs that can aid in the design of my 3D model. I need to consider the design of the player in order to achieve good movement when it comes to animation.

Above are four of the more popular designs, obviously the Apple iPod and iPod Nano are one of the most recognisable music players of recent years and most likely the more popular. Both players feature smooth rectangular design with large screens and touch sensitive scrolling wheels. These type of player would be good to model within 3D due to the simple design but also the opportunity to create a character from an object, for example place a face on the screen, give it arms and legs etc.
Same goes for the 'Creative' player this too features the same design styles as the iPod's. The fourth image shows a Sony MP3 Player this time the players design is that of cylinderical shape with other cylinderical attahchments. This could also easily be developed into a character of sorts.

I need to now come up with design ideas of a player or perhaps an altered design of an existing object that can be animated and built within 3D.

Slight Change to Initial Idea

I've decided to scrap the idea of changing the object into the player that would represent the period of the music. Instead I have decided to use one player for all musical genres and change the style of movement depending on the music. The rest of the initial idea will remain the same.

Initial Video Idea

The brief for this module is to make a 90 second video that acts as a reinterpretation or innovatory development of an object. I have decided to use a personal stereo device as the main object for this video. The idea is that video will feature someone on their way home listening to a portable device such as an iPod, and will show the person selecting various songs of different genres. Each time a new song is selected the view will change and the device itself will become the main focus/character and be listening and reacting to the selected song. The idea is that the personal stereo character changes into the device of the music's era. For example 80's music would see the player become a personal 'Walkman' cassette player and the player would dance and react to the music it's listening to.

When the person/player arrives home, the device will jump into the wall of the living room and the room will become a media centre that is no longer just a personal player. The rooms features will be animated to show this, such as the windows pulsate with the beat of the music etc. This will represent the progression of personal music player's over the years and also show the idea of how they could be used as a device to power a media centre.

I plan to film the video using real time video for journey of the person and device character as well as showing the person scrolling through the music choices from the device. The stereo characters will be created using 3D and animated on to the captured real time footage.
